Both are "WhatsApp for business". They are not competing versions of the same product — they are for businesses at different sizes.
Side by side
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business Platform (WABA) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | One person, or a very small shop | A team, or anyone automating |
| Cost | Free | Meta charges per template message |
| Agents at once | One device (plus limited linked devices) | Many agents, one number |
| Automation | Quick replies, away message | Full API: chatbots, AI agents, routing |
| Chat history | On the phone | On the platform, owned by the business |
| Broadcasts | Small lists, to saved contacts only | Approved templates to opted-in audiences |
| Setup | Install and verify | Meta Business account, verification, a provider |
Stay on the app if…
- One person handles all the messages.
- The volume is comfortable on a phone.
- You do not need software to see or answer the conversations.
There is no shame in this. Many good businesses never need more.
Move to the Platform when…
- Two people need to answer the same number. This is the usual trigger.
- Messages are getting lost, or answered twice.
- An employee leaving means losing conversations and contacts.
- You want a chatbot, an AI agent, or your CRM connected.
- You need to send approved templates to a real audience.
What migration involves
Your existing number can usually move to the Platform, but understand what happens first:
- The number is deleted from the WhatsApp Business app as part of the move. Back up the chat history you care about — it does not travel with the number.
- The number goes through Meta verification on your Business account.
- Once migrated, the number can no longer be used in the app. It lives on the Platform, reachable through your software.
This is a one-way door in practice, so plan it for a quiet hour, not the middle of a sale.
The part people underestimate
The Platform gives you the plumbing; it does not answer anybody. What actually changes the customer experience is what you put on top: one shared inbox, clear ownership of each conversation, and — if you choose — an AI agent that answers instantly and hands over to a human when it should. That is the layer WeizChat provides.
